I’ve lived in Wisconsin my entire life, in various cities and towns across the central and southern parts of the state. After 24 years as a Wisconsinite, I have no desire to move anytime soon. I’ve definitely had my complaints about the state (such as the occasional need for a winter coat in July), but they’re overshadowed by benefits. We might fly under the radar, but here are 11 reasons why Wisconsin is the best state to live:
1. Green Bay Packers.
It’s only natural that this would be number one. There’s virtually nothing about the Packer’s that is not awesome. The Packers are the only football teamed owned by the fans. In fact, they are the only team in any of North America’s four major sports to be owned by the fans! Speaking of fans, it’s been pretty well established that the Packers have the best fan-base in the NFL.
2. The land of 15,000 lakes.
Minnesota might famously be known as “The Land of 10,000 lakes”, but Wisconsin has over 15,000. This is just one reason the tourism industry is booming in the state!
3. Where there’s milk, there’s cheese.
Wisconsin is often referred to as the Dairy State. Thanks to that title, we’re also famous for our cheese. Visitors to the state are often mystified and thrilled by our cheese curds. Fried or squeaky, I dare you to find better.
4. A top university.
Everyone is familiar with the Badgers at the University of Wisconsin. But you might not be aware that Forbes has named the university one of the top 100 schools in the country. Along with a great education, you get great sports teams and a heck of a lot of team spirit!
5. The ability to experience all 4 seasons in one week.
It’s not uncommon for someone to wear a winter coat and a swim suit in the same week. Yes, the weather is that bipolar. It sucks when it results in wearing winter gear on summer vacation, but you can’t complain about wearing shorts in December!
6. Waterpark capital of the world.
The Wisconsin Dells has one of the world’s highest concentrations of water parks in one place, both indoor and outdoor.
7. Beer appreciation.
Not only do Wisconsinites know how to appreciate a good beer (do we ever!), the state is full of breweries making good beer. New Glarus and Leinenkugel’s are two of my favorites.
8. Home of Harley Davidson.
Any motorcycle enthusiast in the country can appreciate Wisconsin, since we’re home to one of the biggest and most famous motorcycle companies in the world.
9. We know how to hold a farmer’s market!
According to Forbes, the farmer’s market in Madison, WI is one of the top 10 in the country. If you’ve ever been there, you’ll understand why! The huge market goes all the way around the Capitol Square and is loaded with freshly grown produce and homemade goods. In addition to the awesome food, you’ll also enjoy the view of the State Capitol.
10. Huge music festivals.
Wisconsin is home to a few huge music festivals. Summerfest, held in Milwaukee, was attended by almost 900,000 people last year! We’re also home to Country USA in Oshkosh, which is one of the country’s biggest country music festivals.
11. Most livable city.
According to livability.com, Wisconsin is home to 2015’s most livable city in the country: Madison! So in addition to living in the best state to live in, I also live in the most livable city!
Fellow Wisconsinites, why do you think Wisconsin is the best state to live?
