As someone who works a full-time job and a creative side-hustle that takes up as much time as a full-time job, self-care is especially important. I’m constantly on the go, and as many of my creative friends can attest to in their own lives, self-care sometimes takes a backseat. It’s important that I’m caring for not only my physical health but my mental health and creativity as well. In this post, I’m sharing how to practice self-care as a creative.
Find a Support Circle
Better yet, find two. The first support circle I have is my real-life support group. At its core, it’s my husband. It also consists of my mom, my brother, and other friends and family. The second support circle is other creatives I have met through blogging. They make the perfect support circle because they’re continually going through the same things I am. They understand the successful and the pitfalls of blogging, and they can offer advice that comes from their own experiences. Both of those circles are essential and I wouldn’t be where I am in my creative business without them.
Organize Your Mind
I wrote a blog post about this very recently, but I feel like it’s worth bringing up here as well. I’m far more stressed out when my mind is cluttered and disorganized, so this is a huge step toward self-care for me! If you’d like to read the blog post about organizing your mind, it offers some steps as to how you can do that.
Get Plenty of Sleep
There are few things more physically and mentally draining for me than not getting enough sleep. While my husband thrives on much shorter amounts of sleep, I really need to get at least 7-8 hours or I just can’t function as I would like to. It can be really difficult when you have a full-time and a creative side-hustle because you often can’t starting working on your blog or business until the evening, but it’s still important to set limits and make sure you’re getting to bed at a decent hour.
I didn’t previously drink a lot of water and looking back, I honestly wonder how I did it! I’ve made it a habit to drink water consistently throughout the day, and I start to feel sick before I’ve even gone an entire day of under-hydrating. I know some people who dislike drinking water, but I promise you’ll feel a physical difference when you start adding it to your routine. And there are ways to make it taste better by adding fruit!
Nourish Your Body
On top of nourishing your mind and making sure you’re getting enough sleep and water, it’s important to nourish your body! Being as busy as I am, it would be easy to fall back on fast food and unhealthy snacks, but I make it a priority to make sure most of what I put in my body is genuinely making a positive difference. I always keep healthy snacks both at home and at work so I rarely have an excuse to fall back on something easier, but ultimately less healthy.
Special K has long been one of my favorite go-to brands for healthier snacks, and lately, I’ve been loving the Special K Blueberry Almond Quinoa Nourish Bites. First of all, blueberry almond is one of my favorite combinations, so that’s an instant win. I also love how convenient the bites are for eating on the go, and they’re easy to snack on while I’m working.
In the evenings lately, I’ve been grabbing the Special K Sea Salt Cracker Chips. It’s preferable than grabbing for something else, but I still get to satisfy the crispy, salty cravings. I always head to Target for my Special K snacks. Looking for more Kellog inspiration? Just click here! P.S. Did I mention you can save on Special K snacks by using Cartwheel at Target? If you’re a creative, you understand the necessity of self-care, and you know what happens when you neglect it. Hopefully, these tips will bring you one step closer to the self-care we’re all constantly striving for.
