If you read this blog regularly, you know I’m all about figuring out how to work as productively as possible. I have a full-time job, meaning I only have a limited number of hours to spend on my blog. I’ve spent a lot of time since we purchased our house making sure my office is as productive as possible. Here are some tips that might help you create a productive workspace too!
Eliminate and Prevent Clutter
Clutter is such a huge productivity killer. I recommend taking some time this week to go through all of the clutter in your workspace, whether that be on your desk, in your desk, and even your digital clutter.
Once you’re done eliminating your clutter, create a system to prevent it from building up in the future. This might include creating a filing system for important documents and organizing papers that are less important and that you’re only keeping short term. I also completely redid my office closet awhile back to make it more conducive to what I prefer for storage.
I am definitely most focused and productive when I don’t have distractions in the room. Occasionally I’ll get the urge to have Netflix on in the background while I work, and I typically get next to nothing done. I would rather just finish my work more quickly and enjoy my shows later! Decide what distractions you can and cannot live with. If the noise from the rest of the people in your home is too much, close the door while you work. Lock out the pets if they bug you too much (our cat just insists on napping next to me while I work). Move your workspace to a room without a TV.
Make it Comfortable
One of the things I hate most about my workspace at my full-time is how little control I have over its comfort. The temperature is set by maintenance, meaning it’s either freezing cold or super warm. I have the same generic, only slightly comfortable office chair as everyone else in the building. Because of these things, you’d better believe I make my home office as comfortable as possible! For me, that means keeping the home at a comfortable temperature but keeping a blanket and the ceiling fan on hand as options to make it warmer or cooler. I also make sure to have a chair I’m comfortable sitting in for long periods of time.
It’s actually kind of amazing how much our level comfort can contribute to or diminish from our productivity. Better to be proactive and create a comfortable workspace from the get-go.
Cater To Your Senses
Sound: I can really only work well with music if it’s something instrumental. Anything else is distracting for me, at least when I’m working on something where I’m really needing to focus.
Smell: I love having something nice to smell, so our house is full of candles, wax warmers, and oil diffusers. It’s not a big deal, but it can be nice to have something pleasant to smell while you’re working. I found a few essential oil blend recommendations on Pinterest for focus and energy, so I’ve been loving trying those.
Sight: Consider the lighting in your office and consider changing out any bulbs that are bothersome after long periods of time. I decided to put my desk right up against the window so I can have as much natural light as possible.
Create a Set-Up That Works for You
Everyone works differently, so it’s on you to decide what setup will be most productive. Some people prefer to have sentimental things like picture frames on their desk. Frankly, I like to eliminate anything I’m not actually using because have a lot of stuff on my desk tends to make me feel a bit claustrophobic. I do use two screens (one is my laptop and the other is a small TV I plug into it), and I find this to be a huge productivity booster. Right now I have a regular desk with a nice office chair, but I plan to add a standing desk attachment at some point.
I find that I’m most productive working at a desk without distractions, but I know some people are perfectly productive on the couch – it’s all about figuring out what works for you!
