I’ve shared a lot of stories about Dave on this blog. I’ve talked about our engagement, our wedding, and the small moments of our life together. But one of the stories I haven’t shared with my readers is that of how I met my husband. It’s the story of how we found each other and fell in love, so it’s an important part of our love story. Today I thought I would share it with all of you.
It was the summer of 2011 and I had just finished my sophomore year of college. I had lived in the dorms again, so I didn’t have my own place in town. However, I still needed to be in Oshkosh to continue working at the Irish Pub where I waited tables. Some friends who had an apartment in town offered to let me crash there when I needed to be in town. So once every week I would make the drive from my home town to Oshkosh and wait tables for a couple of days while crashing in their spare room.
Since I didn’t have an apartment in town or classes to get to, I didn’t have much to do when I got off work. So often I would stop by the gas station where the friend I was staying with (Jordan) was working and visit with him until he got done with work. Things went on like this for a month or so until June, when I stopped at the gas station to find that he was training a new employee. A new employee named Dave.
I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t love at first sight. I was on the tail-end of an awkward relationship and definitely wasn’t looking for someone to spend my life with. I was 20 years old and happy with being single. But I could tell Dave was trying to impress me from Day 1. He was tall (like, super tall) and good-looking. He had an awesome sense of humor and was constantly trying to make me laugh. As they worked together longer, Dave became friends with Jordan and Tierney (his girlfriend at the time, now his wife) and Dave would often come to the apartment to hang out.
Things went on like this for awhile. I would see Dave when I was in town. He would make me laugh. I still wasn’t anticipating a relationship with him, though. However, my friend Jordan, never one to be shy, would make comments all the time about how Dave and I should just start dating already. Subtle, right? In retrospect, Jordan and Tierney were a big part of Dave and I finally getting together. Mostly because they were just so pushy.
One night when I was in Oshkosh, Jordan was working and Tierney was out of town. I had their apartment to myself and I was bored. I stopped by the gas station and Jordan pushed me to text Dave and ask if he wanted to come over and hang out. I was nervous, never one to make the first move. But, I did it anyways. He came over and we watched Netflix together until Jordan got done with work. It was definitely the turning point in our relationship. After that, we started texting back and forth all day, every day. Dave worked so hard to make me laugh, and it worked. He used cheesy pick-up lines like no other. There was still a week or so until I moved back to Oshkosh for good, but Dave promised that he would come over to help me move into my apartment.
The following week, moving day came. It was ridiculous. It was 90 degrees out and I was going to be moving furniture, but I spent forever getting ready since I would be seeing Dave. Sure enough, there he was waiting when we pulled up in the moving truck. I’m sure he had to be nervous, as he was meeting my mom before we had actually started dating. He was amazing, though, and ended up doing all the heavy lifting while my mom and I spent much of the day sitting in the moving truck.
He had to go to work but promised to come back after work. When he did, we spent hours talking and unpacking. We both knew we would start dating after that, and had our first real date just a few days later. The rest was like a fairy tale, as cheesy as it sounds. We fell in love immediately and within months, I knew he was the one I was going to marry.
I hope you enjoyed the glimpse into mine and Dave’s relationship. It was a comical beginning, but certainly one I cherish.
