Ever since we purchased our new house earlier this year, entertaining has been super fun for us. Especially since we actually have a place to do so now! As fun as it is, one of the responsibilities that comes with entertaining is getting your home company-ready! Or if you have people over fairly often, keeping your home company ready! Since this is something we’ve finally gotten the hang of, I wanted to share my advice with you all as well, especially as we’re getting into the thick of the holiday season!
Focus on the Living Space
I’m going to let you in on a quick secret. I don’t clean my entire house when we have company coming over. In a perfect world, the entire house would be clean all the time, but that’s just not how that goes. When it comes to cleaning, my first priority is the main living space where we might have company. Basically, this includes the living room, the kitchen, and the main bathroom. This would also include the spare bedroom if the guests are staying overnight.
It’s your home, so you get to choose where you do your entertaining! Choose which rooms you’ll use to entertain your guests, get those rooms, clean, and guide your guests there when they arrive. In most cases, this is pretty easy, if you’re entertaining in the main living space. The danger of someone wandering into our bedroom to hang out is pretty slim!
Maintain Daily Cleaning Tasks
Let’s be honest – if you only keep your house clean when you have company, that’s just not manageable. Regardless of who is going to be seeing your home, you want to live in a nice, sanitary space. The daily cleaning tasks should likely include dishes, decluttering, laundry (as needed), and anything else that is appropriate for your family.
Not only does this increase your quality of life, but it makes it so much easier to get the home clean when you do have company.
Have a Place for Everything
This is not new advice. You should definitely have a place for everything in your home. But here’s the thing. My home looks a bit different when it’s just Dave and I than it does when we have company. There might be things that are out on the table or counter 100% of the time when it’s just Dave and I at home because they’re used regularly, but I put away when we have company because they just don’t add much to the visual appeal. One example would be the toaster. I use the toaster regularly and keep it on the counter all the time, but I have a space in the cupboard for it anyways so I can tuck it away when we have company.
I think people look at their friends with clean homes and assume they look like that all the time. Though that may be the case for some, putting away a few of the everyday-use functional items that aren’t as pretty makes a big difference!
When in Doubt, Add Scents
On a shelf right in our living room, we have two candle warmers and without fail whenever we have company, whether it’s planned ahead or a last-minute visit, those warmers are the first thing we flip on. They smell so nice, they really freshen up the entire living space, and they have the added bonus of looking really nice and being nice living room decor.
Whether it’s candle warmers, actual candles, or some other sort of air freshener, adding a little bit of scent to the room goes a long way in making your home seem welcoming and company-ready.
Stay on Top of Cleaning Up After Pets
Anyone with a pet that sheds understands the importance of staying on top of cleaning up after them. Trust me, we’ve got one dog and one cat. It’s a struggle. Our dog is black, and black hair is super visible on lots of surfaces, specifically carpet and our light-colored couch! It honestly can feel like you’re constantly cleaning up that pet hair, but if you don’t, it takes over and becomes nearly impossible to catch up! And I don’t know about you, but it’s a pet peeve of mine to visit someone with a pet and leave the house 100% covered in pet hair.
Luckily I’ve been able to find a tool that makes it significantly easier to keep up with the pet hair! Lately. I’ve been using the Scotch-Brite™ 50% Stickier Lint Roller (that I picked up at Target – they’ve got a Cartwheel deal for 15% until December 3!) and this thing has definitely made a difference! I mainly use it on the couch, since that’s where the pets like to hang out with us. It easily picks up pet hair and also grabs any extra crumbs we may have dropped. As it’s name suggests, it’s 50% stickier and you can definitely tell the difference! While I don’t mind vacuuming the carpet, I would really rather avoid the hassle of doing so on the couch, especially since it has to be done so often!
