It’s so hard for me to believe that we’re less than one month from our move. We put an offer in on the house at the end of March, and the two and a half months we had ahead of us seemed like an eternity! Now, the last month and a half has absolutely flown by, and the short month we have left seems so short. And we’ve got an awful lot left to fit into that month! I am thankful we started preparing for the move early to help eliminate some of the overwhelm. Here are a few ways to prepare for a move that’s one month away!
We’re Packing the Nonessentials
This is something I knew I wanted to start early. Because we live in a small apartment, we have things that either traveled with us to this apartment from our former home or that we’ve acquired since moving here, but haven’t had space to store them anywhere except storage. Since we haven’t been using those things, they were easy to pack up early. We’ve also been able to pack all things seasonal, most of our small kitchen appliances (waffle maker, fondue pot), and all art and frames. Our current goal is one box per day.
We’re Purging and Donating
One of the great things about having to go through everything you own is that you find plenty of things you don’t use, probably won’t use, and definitely don’t need. We found several of these in storage! Even though we’re moving to a bigger home, it’s nice to know we won’t be wasting space storing things that aren’t adding to our life. We’re already one Goodwill trip down, and I’m sure we’ll be making a few more over the next month.
We’re Making Appointments
We’ve made sure to make appointments for things we’ll need the week of, such as the carpet cleaning and the moving truck. Luckily Tuesday isn’t a particularly popular day to move, so things aren’t booking up fast, but we would definitely rather be prepared than risk having trouble getting anything booked.
We’re Window Shopping
Since we’re upgrading our home from a rented apartment to our own house, we’re going to be upgrading quite a few of our belongings as well. We’ll be upgrading our bed and couch, and buying things like a grill and patio furniture that we didn’t have space for before. Since we don’t want to have to fit more into the moving truck than is necessary, we’ll be waiting until after the move to purchase these items. However, we’ve started window shopping for them so we know exactly what we want when the time comes.
For the first time in our lives, we’re going to have a home that we can paint, alter, and decorate to our heart’s content without having to consult a landlord. We’ll definitely be doing some painting, so we’ve been excitedly talking about paint colors. We’ve also been planning how we’ll set up certain rooms, what certain spaces will be used for, etc.
You guys, I’m so excited about this move. This is our first house, so that alone is a huge deal. It’s everything we wanted in our next home and I can’t wait to start settling in. The things I’m most excited about? The big yard and gorgeous deck – Leia is going to LOVE all that space to run around; more living space – instead of one small apartment, we’ll have a kitchen, a dining space, a living room, and a den in the basement; my own office – I can’t wait to get it set up, and you better believe I’ll be sharing about it on the blog!
