Since Dave and I are both close to our families and have family in several places throughout Wisconsin and Michigan, we spend a lot of time traveling. Obviously we love visiting family and friends, but it can be exhausting. We either take a half-day on Friday or leave right after work to drive anything from 1.5 to 5 hours. We spend one full day, then turn around on Sunday and make the drive all over again. Often times, we end up over-scheduling ourselves. We’ll have two months in a row sometimes where we’re driving somewhere else every weekend. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves to set aside weekends at home for us. When we have these rare weekends sans responsibilities and prior commitments, we try to make them as relaxing and stress-free as possible! If you’re someone who is constantly busy on the weekends, whether that be visiting loved ones or catching up on errands and housework, consider planning yourself a staycation. Set aside a weekend for relaxation and fun with your significant other, or just for yourself! Here are a few tips to help you plan the perfect staycation.
Get the ugly stuff out of the way before the weekend.
If you’re going to have a staycation, you aren’t going to want to be doing housework! Make sure everything is done before the weekend so you can enjoy your weekend with a clean house. If we need to run any errands for groceries, snacks, etc, we typically do that Friday on our way home from work so we don’t have to run errands during our weekend.
I also make sure to get my workouts for the week in Monday-Friday, because I’m definitely not going to be working out on my staycation!
Check out any local events or festivals.
Madison is the perfect city for a staycation, because there is always tons going on! There is the Farmer’s Market, festivals, concerts, etc going on every weekend. Just last weekend was an event called Taste of Madison where restaurants all over town set up tents farmers market style on the Capitol square and sold sample-size servings of some of their most popular dishes. It was a blast! If you’re town has events going on in town, check them out!
Spend some time outside.
Dave and I don’t have our own yard at the apartment we’re at now, but when we did we used to love spending an evening outside, setting up a campfire, having a few beers, etc. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday evening! Set up the grill, splurge on some great steaks, make some drinks, and sit around a fire. You could get really crazy and make s’mores too!
Order takeout and have a movie or Netflix marathon.
Whenever Dave and I have weekends at home, we always order takeout. Going out to dinner can be fun, but so is easy immense amounts of Chinese food on your couch, in your sweatpants, watching a movie with your husband by your side. Rent some of your favorite movies or binge-watch a show together on Netflix.
