Literally anyone who knows me knows that I am not exactly famous for being a morning person. I can think of quite a few people (my mom and husband included) who have had the unpleasant experience of attempting to drag me out of bed in the morning. Let’s just say, it hasn’t always been a pleasant task. One of the best parts of college is being able to craft your own class schedule, and avoid morning classes at all costs. Unfortunately, we don’t have the same leeway when it comes to the real world. I can’t image the stare I would get if I suggested to my boss that I get to work at 11 am instead of 8:30. Yeah, not happening. Instead, we have to find tactics that will help us get out of bed earlier so can arrive at work without being zombies until lunch time. That’s why I wanted to share these tips with you for how to become a morning person!
Go To Bed Earlier
It’s no surprise that this is tip #1 on the list. If you want to start getting up earlier in the morning but don’t want to lose out on precious sleep time, math says you’ll have to start going to bed earlier. Start small by going to bed 15 minutes earlier this week. If you’ve found that you can adjust to that, push it up another 15 minutes the following week.
De-stress Your Evenings
Though part of the equation has to do with going to bed earlier, the other part has to do with making sure the way you spend your evenings is more conducive to a good night’s sleep. Try to wind down things like phone and computer awhile before bed so your brain can have to destress before hitting the hay.
Create a Bedtime Routine
I think a bedtime routine is a super effective way to make evenings (and therefore mornings) easier. It doesn’t have to be rocket science, just something that your brain can do on autopilot so you aren’t flustered before bed. Our bedtime routine looks something like this. We usually do a combination of household chores, cooking, entertainment (video games for Dave, Netflix and blogging for me) during the evening. Around 9-9:30 I head up to remove my makeup and wash my face, take out my contacts, etc. Then Dave and I will snuggle in for an episode or two of whatever show we happen to be watching at the time, usually with a snack of some kind. Then we take Leia out for the final time and head up to bed. It’s simple, and it works for us. Simple is better, guys!
Just as we discussed with going to bed earlier, you’ll want to start small. Considering we’re talking about a change that’s likely going to benefit you for years or decades to come, there’s no reason to change your sleep pattern all in one morning! Set a very small goal for yourself at first, and continue to push that wake-up time up earlier and earlier until you’ve ultimately reached your wake-up goal!
Skip the Snooze
Ahh, that snooze button. I’ve been a fan for years. Here’s the thing, though. You know that extra few minutes of sleep you get between hitting the snooze button and the time the alarm goes off again? Well, that’s not actually quality sleep! And half the time, I swear I’m more tired the next time the alarm goes off. Who wants to roll the dice like that?? A few ways to accomplish this would be putting the phone or alarm clock on the other side of the room so you have to get up to turn it off, or to turn off the snooze option on your phone.
Make Mornings Easier
When I think about getting up earlier and making the most of my mornings, I definitely want to make things as easy on myself as possible. For instance, instead of trying to pick out an outfit in the morning when my brain hasn’t totally turned on for the day, I would rather do it in the evening when I’m alert and awake enough to think about things like the weather forecast, and what I’ve got on the calendar that day. I also like to make my mornings easier by preparing my lunch and snacks for the day the night before. Having unexpected tasks to do really throws me off in the morning, so there’s nothing worse than being about to walk out the door and remembering you haven’t prepared a lunch yet. Finally, I like to make things easier on myself by showering the night before. The thought of having to go through the whole process of showering in the morning and then drying my hair (I’ve got super thick hair) makes my cringe. I would so much rather just have to deal with styling my hair than doing the whole shebang from step one.
Plan a Fun Morning Activity
You’ve probably read a million articles that will tell you to work out in the morning because it will force you to get out of bed and you’ll feel super energized after your workout. And that might be true for you. But for me, there’s no quicker way to get me to pull my pillow over my face and throw my alarm clock against the wall than by thinking about working out in the morning. I’ve tried it, and I’ve hated it. And that’s okay! Working out in the morning is not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. But I do appreciate the sentiment of planning something for your morning that will motivate you to get your butt out of bed. And for me, that’s breakfast.
Dave and I have had the same tradition since we joined the real world with our big-kid jobs three years ago. Each morning we get up a little early and eat breakfast together while watching the news. It gives us some time each morning to ease into our day, talk about what’s happening that day, and focus on each other for a bit before heading off to work.
The other thing I love about this morning routine is that I can get a good breakfast in before I head out the door. If there’s one thing I’ve learned about myself over the years, it’s that I’m useless without breakfast. I feel super tired and unmotivated, not to mention starving, all morning. If there’s another thing I’ve learned about myself, it’s that I don’t care to put in a whole lot of prep time at breakfast. I prefer something quick and easy that doesn’t require a much prep-work (see bullet point above about making mornings easier.)
