You’ve found the dress. Now it’s time to find their dresses. And this time you aren’t just shopping for a dress that will look good on one woman, but on several! But it’s really not as stressful as it sounds. It was around this time last year that my ladies and I went shopping for their bridesmaid dresses, and we had such a fun day! Since these are your best friends, you want to do right by them and find a gorgeous dress for them to wear. But that can be easier said than done with a bunch of ladies with different opinions and different body types! Here are 9 tips to help you find the perfect bridesmaid dress.
1. Treat your bridesmaids.
Make sure they know how much you appreciate them. These girls are putting quite a bit of time and money into your wedding, so make sure they know how much you love them for it. When you go shopping, make a full experience of it by taking your girls out for lunch or dinner afterward!
2. Make appointments!
This is so important, especially if you’re going on a day like Saturday. Try walking into David’s Bridal on a late Saturday morning without an appointment and see how that works out. I promise, you’ll be sorry. This is even more vital if you have a large bridal party. This will ensure they have a consultant for you, and enough dressing rooms for the ladies.
3. Research ahead of time.
When we went to the bridal salon, we all dug through the racks and pulled out dresses we wanted someone to try on. But I also looked around online before hand and had some specific dresses I knew I wanted them to try on. I’m glad I did, because one of those is the dress we ended up picking!
4. Shop early.
Bridesmaids dresses typically come in a lot faster than wedding dresses, but shopping early is still a good idea. Some boutiques and designers require 6 months for the dress to come in (though if you’re going go David’s Bridal, it will be a lot quicker). That will give everyone plenty of time to get their dress altered without too much of a time constraint.
5. Be mindful of budget.
Please remember that your girls are the ones paying for these dresses (unless you’re lucky enough to have the budge to buy them yourself). Also remember that in addition to this dress, they’re spending plenty more money for your wedding. Please don’t start pulling $400 dresses off the rack for them to try on unless you know that is within everyone’s budget. It’s going to make everyone uncomfortable when you pick a dress and they have to tell you they can’t afford it. If budgets are especially tight, check out the Target bridesmaid line!
6. Consider the season and time of day.
This will help you decide color, as well as style. If you’re getting married in the dead of winter in Wisconsin, don’t put those ladies in short chiffon dresses! You might not have any friends left afterward.
7. Keep the ladies’ body type in mind.
And remember that no two bridesmaids are built the same! No matter what, everyone is going to have certain styles that just don’t look great on their body type. Be sensitive to that when you’re shopping and find a dress that will look great on everyone. Want to achieve this? Ask your girls what they’d like to wear! They’ll know what looks best on them.
8. Don’t pick a dress that they hate.
For the most part, I think it’s fine for the bride to have the final say on the bridesmaid dress. But within reason. If your girls hate the dress or someone thinks it looks awful on them, ditch it. It is not worth choosing a dress that is going to make your bridesmaids uncomfortable and unhappy on your wedding day.
9. Ditch the matching dresses.
I went with matching bridesmaid dresses for my wedding, but you certainly don’t have to! It’s becoming more and more popular for brides to choose a color or fabric and let the bridesmaids choose their own dress. I’m in a wedding next summer where we’re doing this and I can’t wait to see how it turns out!
