Recently I shared a post about how I turn my hobby blog into a side hustle. Specifically, I talked about time management and balancing my blog with a full-time job. Since I know many of you are hoping to better balance the different aspects of your life, I wanted to write a post sharing what a typical day in my life looks like, and how I balance everything.
6:15 – My alarm goes off for the first time. Dave has to be at work significantly earlier than me. Since we try to eat breakfast together as often as possible, we both set our alarms for this time for him to hop in the shower and for me to get breakfast ready.
6:30 – The alarms go off again. We mutually decide that on this particular morning we’d rather steal that extra few minutes of sleep (mostly because we were up late binge-watching Netflix), so we turn off the alarms.
7:15 – I’m awake again, and this time I actually have to get up. I usually shower at night, so thankfully I don’t have to worry about that this morning. I take Leia outside and quickly get dressed, throw on some concealer and mascara, and brush my hair and teeth. I eat a quick breakfast and pack a lunch while my coffee brews. Since it’s summer, I’m all about the iced coffee (homemade Keurig iced coffee recipe coming soon on the blog!)
8:00 – By this time, I’m ready to head out the door. I pack up my things, say goodbye to Leia (who is anxiously watching me, wondering why the heck I’m leaving her again), and walk out the door.
8:30 – After putting my lunch in the fridge, filling up my water bottle (I always have my water bottle at my desk and try to fill it up several times per day) I settle in at my desk. I catch up with my coworkers, check emails, listen to voicemails, and figure out what I need to get done that day. This will vary, depending on the time of year. During our busy times, my to-do list is pages and pages long each day and I’m never caught up. These days it’s much shorter, as work is super slow right now.
11:00 – Around this time, I need a snack! Am I the only one who can’t make it more than a few hours without eating? I seriously feel like I’m constantly eating at work. Today I went with SnackWell’s Biscuit Thins. These Biscuit Thins are new and have absolutely been my obsession lately. They initially roped my in because they are coffee flavored, and are actually made with real coffee! They come in three flavors: Caramel Macchiato, French Vanilla, and Dark Chocolate Mocha. My favorite is the Dark Chocolate Mocha (obviously!) They also make the perfect better-for-you snack because they’re made with clean ingredients (no high fructose corn syrup, no partially hydrogenated oils, no fat), and they keep me going during the day thanks to being high in protein, fiber, whole grains, and coffee. Finally, they conveniently come packaged in single serving sizes, so it’s super easy to grab a package and throw it in my purse on the way out the door!
12:00 – When the weather is nice (so basically April-October in Wisconsin), my best friend (who also happens to be one of my coworkers) and I like to use our lunch hours to walk. We typically just walk around the Capitol Square for about half an hour. It’s a great way to get some exercise, get out of the office, and catch up on our lives. I love that we’re actually slow enough at work to take advantage of this right now!
1:00 – Lunch time! Unless I’m going out to lunch with coworkers (which I don’t do very often) I eat lunch at my desk. Nine times out of ten I bring lunch from home, and occasionally go out and grab a sub. Today I’m eating chicken salad over spinach. Yum!
4:00 – Still at work, and time for another snack (I told you I eat a lot at work!) Typically the afternoon it’s just a piece of fruit and a cheese stick. Since I work out before eating dinner, I have to get some food in my stomach. I cannot work out hungry.
5:00 – Time to go home. Woohoo!
5:20 – I made it home in good time, despite the horrendous traffic in the evenings downtown! I get changed, catch up with Dave, say hi to Leia, etc.
5:30 – I usually try to work out first thing when I get home so I don’t lose my motivation. That usually either means running (Dave and I are working our way through the C25K right now!) or Pilates (I just pull up a YouTube video for this).
6:00 – When the workout is over, it’s time to make dinner! During the summer we end up grilling 90% of the time, and since Dave does the grilling (on this particular night he made black bean burgers), this is my opportunity to hop in the shower.
6:30 – Shower is done, dinner is done. Time to eat! We like to eat outside when it’s nice out, which gives Leia the opportunity to run around and chase squirrels.
6:45 – Time to settle in for some blogging! I write my blog posts and schedule my social media for the week on the weekends, so during the week it’s mostly maintenance stuff such as responding to comments, responding to social media posts, commenting on other blogs, etc. This is also when I work on emails, work on the Etsy shop, and plan out future projects! I might also watch some TV during this time. While the show is on, I’m working on blog tasks, During commercials, I get up and do tasks around the house (loading the dishwasher, wiping down counters, switching out laundry, etc).
9:00 – Dave and I will watch whatever Netflix show we happen to be watching together. We always try to have one show going that we watch together, and we’ll usually watch one or two episodes each night together.
10:30 – Time to start getting ready for bed. This means taking Leia out one last time, washing my face, brushing teeth, getting things ready for the next morning, etc. 10:30 might be early for some people, but I legitimately can’t function when I don’t get enough sleep!
Alright friends, that’s what a typical Monday looks like in my life. Each day of the week varies, but they all look pretty similar. I do most of my blogging in the evening and on weekends. I take advantage of things like commercials for getting housework done and rarely watch TV or Netflix without also being on my computer.
