Article after article about marriage tells you to incorporate a date night into your routine. I totally agree. I think date nights are amazing. And even when you’re like Dave and I and live alone with no roommates or kiddos, there’s a big difference between eating dinner together and hanging out at home versus going on a date. But dates usually cost money, friends. For the past three years, Dave and I have always been saving for something. First it was graduating college and moving to a new city to find jobs. Then it was two years of saving for a wedding. And the day we got back from the honeymoon, we started furiously saving for a house. So the amount of disposable income left over for dates is pretty minimal. But don’t worry. I’m here to share with you some awesome cheap date ideas when you’re like my husband and I and don’t have the extra cash!
Find an outdoor activity to do together
One of the great things about the outdoors is that it’s typically free! If you’re an athletic couple, you can go for a bike ride or find a tennis court to play together without having to spend a dime. If you’re in a city with some lakes, there might be boat rental companies that will allow you to take a boat out on the lake for a day. Camping is another great cheap date idea if that’s something the two of you enjoy.
This definitely doesn’t sound like your traditional date, but can be so much fun! Think about all the fun things you can do with volunteering! Maybe you love animals but can’t have a dog in your apartment? Head to the local Humane Society and volunteer to walk and play with the animals. Love being outdoors? Volunteer to help build houses for those in need. The options are truly endless, and I guarantee you’ll be able to find a charity or organization that allows you to do something you enjoy while helping someone else.
Take a brewery tour together
Brewery tours are often cheap, or even free, and a super fun activity! It will be something new to do together, and often you get a free drink at the end of your tour. Southern Wisconsin is an area with loads of cool breweries, but every state will have some of their own!
Be a tourist in your own city
Madison has so much to offer, and Dave and I haven’t taken advantage of that nearly enough. I’m sure your city has plenty of things to do as well! (Yes, even small towns have cool things to do). So take a Saturday afternoon and just explore the city. Walk around downtown, visit food carts, and check out the free attractions your city has to offer. Just a quick Google search will tell you what you can do for free. It’s amazing to me how many free things Madison has! Our zoo is free, which is just nuts.
Visit a piano bar
The piano bar is without a doubt one of my favorite places in Madison, and one of my favorite cheap date ideas. I had never been to a piano bar before moving to Madison, but it was one of the first places we visited when we went out with friends after moving here. The cover charge is small, even free if you get there at the right time. They always have drink specials, so you can drink for cheap. Plus, you’re getting an entire night of entertainment! It gets livelier and livelier as the night goes on and you’ll find yourself singing along by the end of the night, all for less than $25!
