Okay, so it’s not technically summer yet, but it may as well be with the weather we’ve been having lately (not complaining, by the way!) Since it’s absolutely gorgeous out and we’re all itching to spend more time outside, I wanted to put together a few ideas for affordable summer date ideas that will have you outside with your significant other! I was asked to participate in the #BrewAndRenew campaign, sponsored by Hills Bros. Coffee. Although I have been compensated, all opinions are my own. These are just a few of my favorite summer date ideas, but make sure to leave your favorites in the comments!
Visit the Farmers Market
One of the biggest perks I have found to living in Madison is the literally never-ending number of community activities. One of my favorites has become the local Farmer’s Market, which takes place all the way around the Capitol Square. There are so many delicious foods to check out including organic produce, freshly baked bread and desserts, cheese, homemade honey, etc. You seriously can’t find a more delicious date. We usually pick up just a few things each time we go, but being outside and enjoying the community spirit is a fantastic way to spend a Saturday morning.
Have a Cookout for Two
In this blog post, I mentioned one of the things I’m most excited for when it comes to home ownership is finally having a yard and a deck all to ourselves! Right now we have a lawn that we share with a few hundred other people, and a balcony that fits two chairs, two people, and a dog if you really squeeze, and not a single other thing. Oh, and did I mention we aren’t allowed to have a grill? We cannot wait to be able to lounge on our deck, have a few drinks, and grill out.
Having a cookout for two is a perfect affordable date night! All you’re paying for is the food. And you get to enjoy the company of your favorite person without the burden of paying for parking, driving home afterward, or paying for a taxi. It’s basically the best of all worlds!
Attend a Minor League Baseball Game
How is it that watching baseball on TV is the dullest, but attending a baseball game is super fun? Who knows. But I do know that hitting up major league games can be expensive! First, there’s the price of the ticket, which can be crazy depending on where you live; you then have to add in gas to get there, the cost of parking, food, and drink at the game, etc. I heard on the radio the other day that the cost of two people attending an MLB game is upwards of $80. No thanks. Luckily Madison has a minor league team. We’ve been to watch their games, and it’s a super fun experience! Plus, bonus, the stadium is less than a mile from our new house. We don’t have to trek the hour and a half to Milwaukee for a game, and we’ll save a ton of money.
Summer is basically here, so naturally, that means spending a ton of time outside. While our definitions of enjoying nature probably differ greatly (mine looks like laying on a beach, while other’s includes hiking and rock climbing), there’s no excuse not to be enjoying it. One super fun way to enjoy it for a date would be trying a new activity together! There are so many outdoor sports you can try together. Madison is located on two lakes, so I’ve been wanting to rent a boat and spend a day on the lake. The options are literally endless with this one.
Attend a Festival
Because the weather is only super nice for about 4-5 months of the year here in Wisconsin, we have to cram every fair, festival and outdoor event into the months of May-October. That means that literally every single weekend you can find a festival going on not too far away. And they make amazing dates! Food, drinks, rides, games, and music? Yes, please!
Last weekend Dave and I spent our Saturday at one of these awesome local festivals, a Madison favorite known as Brat Fest. And yes, that is a festival where people eat tons and tons of brats. Because brats are a Wisconsin staple in the summer. It was such an awesome afternoon. We ate brats (obviously), listened to music, and played festival games.
We also made sure to stop by the Hills Bros. Coffee sampling truck (because who says no to a free coffee sample) to check out their new compostable single serve pods (they break down to become nutrients for soil when processed in a composting facility!) After 137 years, Hills Bros. Coffee has pretty much nailed the perfect cup, mostly because they use the best beans and have innovative roasting methods. Through their current #BrewAndRenew campaign, they’re inviting everything to try their new compostable pods at events all across the country this year, bring a taste of San Francisco to everyone. I seriously recommend you check it out when they’re visiting your town because I know my readers can’t pass up a good cup of coffee!
